Forgotten Violin Masters of Old Vilnius

From October 10 to December 31, 2025, we implemented the project "Forgotten Violin Masters of Old Vilnius", during which special attention was paid to interactive education.

During this period, 10 educational sessions were held, bringing together schoolchildren, students, educators, seniors and community members. In total, about 250-300 participants took part in the education sessions, who together embarked on an acquaintance with the world of Vilnius string instrument craftsmanship.

During the education we explored:

– The legacy of Vilnius string instrument masters

– Authentic workshop atmosphere

– Historical documents, instruments and their sounds

– The cultural context behind the history of each stringed instrument

There were also practical sessions - demonstrations of working with wood and active involvement of participants, allowing them to experience the craft of craftsmanship up close.

The result is an educational series that introduces the production, history, and craftsmanship of stringed instruments.

These educational activities will continue annually, involving new audiences.

We see this project as a long-term investment in Vilnius' cultural heritage, the results of which will be used and developed in the future.

Several interactive education sessions are regularly held in the workshop:

The birth process of the classical violin.

They are taught how to choose wood, what the model and shape of a violin can be, how to tension strings and make a bow. Participants in the education have the opportunity to try out woodworking tools. The education can be held in English.

The old traditions of musical instrument making in Vilnius.

The 17th-century Dankwart family workshop and its production methods are presented, why these musical instruments were considered Italian, what was the significance of the selection of wood, and what the "hairs" of the bow were made of.
